Is the Falkland Islands a 'magic' spot for 6m? Absolutely! I have had openings EVERYDAY while down here. Not bad compared to what
we get in Northern Europe. I have made a total of 500 QSOs; pretty good for
'business' trip!

6m is all about location, location and location. When
the band was open signals from the hot spots such as 9H, IT9 and SV were
end-stop while 6m in the more northern climes was dead, dead, dead. Nothing
new here then!

The Falkland Islands is a marvelous place; great
weather with blue sky and warm weather all week, not at all like its
reputation! Its inhabitants are friendly people living a real
'village' life in Stanley. I will definitely be going back!

There are not many active VP8s, probably only half a
dozen at the most. Why? Before the Falklands war there was no telephone
system and the islanders used radio as their main means of communication
between Stanley and 'the Camp' (anywhere outside of Stanley). When
Cable & Wireless put in a telephone network the vast majority of VPs stopped using radio. However, both Keith, VP8CMT and Neil,VP8AWU are now
keen on 6m and both have promised to carry on what I have started! Keith, in
particular spent a lot of time listening and getting used to the band.
Hopefully, Neil will
have his 6m antenna up within the month. I am also writing an article for
the local paper (Penguin News, what else could the they call it?) to try and
raise further interest in amateur radio.

You must remember that Keith and Neil work away from home during their summer (our winter) so there is little chance of
operating 6m during the week. However, the Falklands is now moving into winter
so there is much more opportunity to operate. I am hoping that with the Es
extensions we get in Northern Europe we will be able to work VP8 in June or
July. I have told them to listen for 'WOS in the noise or pileups! I have to
admit that I am tempted to come down again in the yearwith an M2 antennas and
an amplifier! As I want to have an on-going relationship with the Island's
Internet activities this may be possible. Mario, VP8ALJ has offered me the use of his masts.

DXpeditioning is fun. It's nice to be called rather
than calling for change!

I hope VP8 is now well and truly on the 6m world map!
